This is a fabulous novel, Robert Shaw has managed to touch on every age and every stage of growing up from Mikey to his family, his best friend Candy to the bullies and the mean girls at school. Mikey's dream girl Lian is a beautiful fully developed character whose personal story is every bit as gripping as Mikey's. Everyone has a lesson to learn through the course of the story. Even Mikey's parent's romantic troubles get a turn. The characters are well developed and everyone has a distinctive voice with personal dramas that need to be heard, explored and shared. Robert Shaw effortlessly spends time on each character arc and yet no character feels bereft of a backstory. This is a well rounded novel that every teenager should read. But can be enjoyed by every adult as well. Girlfriend Trouble is a book for all ages. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't wait to read more of Robert Shaw's work. @LaurienotLoriProduct details

Girlfriend Trouble Robert Shaw 9780981599335 Books Reviews
Even though it is more for younger readers, I loved it!
I am going to have my granddaughter read it.
Wonderful story. Do yourself a favor and buy it.
Girlfriend Trouble
I can honestly say as an "older" reader (who does a lot of reading) that I thought this was a very well written book on the subject of bullying, one which gives much more insight than articles or other coverage. Before I passed Mr. Shaw's book to younger parents of teenagers, I felt it important that I get a chance to read it. Girlfriend Trouble approaches bullying not only from the experiences and perspectives of the bullied, but also of the bullies. It gives hope that with more understanding, patience, and insight, perhaps more tolerance can happen. There is throughout the book a mystical, even magical sequence of events. It's funny to say you can "enjoy" a book on bullying, but this one does uplift the spirit, and while it does involve teenage love, you'll find a minimum of kissing, no swearing, and a minimum of physical fighting. In other words, Awesome!
This is a surprisingly good book. It’s a book that will appeal to the young and young at heart. Yes, the story has its sappy moments and some of the characters act improbably, but overall author Robert Shaw delivers a thoroughly enjoyable read. Teenagers Mikey and Lian battle school bullies and their own insecurities, and along the way prove to themselves and others the importance of having faith in oneself. This is a book for those who believe that dreams can come true, that even losers can find love and happiness, that innocence still exists in this world, and that kindness and goodness will prevail over meanness and badness.
Robert Shaw has written a delightful book! Girlfriend Trouble is as far from his other book, The Scare, as you can get and still is just as wonderful but in a completely different way! Clearly Robert has good insight into the minds of both bullies and victims. It is also obvious that he understands people and how they think. This book is wonderfully well written and in the end you are cheering for both the victims and the bullies as they navigate the treacherous waters known as high school. Bravo, Robert Shaw!!! 5 stars.
This was a good coming of age story with great themes and issues. Peer pressure, bullying, insecurities, tolerance and intolerance, understanding and forgiveness, self control, and dynamics of family life were woven throughout... Oh, the lessons we all hope to learn early in life and seem to so often during our school years! Shaw does a great job with the scenes and characters, is a good storyteller and has a strong voice. I especially enjoyed the dialogues! The book has an easy flow. If, as the saying goes, one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch, can we not find that the opposite might also be true? Happy to recommend to young readers as well as adults, but especially to teenagers.
Here’s a very well-written book on bullying and several youth problems.
The author puts himself in the shoes of not only of victims but also of perpetrators (who eventually prove to be victims too.) The main ingredients of the story are wisely selected to attract young readers family relationships, common school types, martial arts, the philosophy of the East and -above all- an Adolescent Love!
As the thread of the story unfolds, the reader has the impression to watch a young romantic film, spiced by exciting fight scenes as well as touching ones, featuring vivid characters, and realistic situations.
Note that the whole story, although endowed with a powerful moral never has a didactic tone.
In short, an engaging story addressing not only to people young of age but also young at heart.
